I was recently reviewing a diet program (I won’t mention the program name), when it struck me just how much misinformation gets circulated. The diet program itself was fine. I think that it could help some people to lose weight. But as I read the e-book explaining the diet, I was honestly shocked at some of the statements made.

Every diet out there needs a marketing edge to help sell the product. Sometimes it’s a gimmick or a slogan. But other times it’s a hard edged and highly focused viewpoint that ignores much of what works in a bid to create something ‘new’. I think that any good diet author should recognize their responsibility to provide good advice and to word it so that people don’t get the wrong end of the stick.

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler” – so said Albert Einstein, and he was right. Attempts to over simplify weight loss and dieting can put you at risk of creating half-truths or misleading statements. Rarely in this field is anything black and white. When writing an e-book you should take the time to ‘qualify’ your statements and reasoning.

If the reader remembers only a little of your e-book or seminar, you can bet that it will be those half-truths or out-of-context quotes that will stick in their mind. The human mind attaches to such things much more readily than to long winded facts.

Here I will just cover a few of the program’s misleading statements. I don’t want to give away the program’s identity by being too specific.

1. High intensity exercise is a waste of time for fat loss. On the contrary, high intensity exercise is one of the best exercise methods for people trying to lose weight. Many people who attempt high intensity workouts only reach medium intensity levels. This so called fat-burning-zone, that was once so popular, is the worst type of exercise for keeping the fat off. So I will stress here that if you are going to do high intensity workouts, then make sure the intensity IS high enough. At the same time, I advise wearing a heart monitor during such workouts, and definitely seeking medical advice beforehand.

2. Walking is the best exercise for fat loss. If you are not capable of more strenuous exercise then I agree. Brisk walking definitely works if done regularly. But there are more effective exercises that will bring much more rapid results and provide long term benefits. Because walking is outside the traditional ‘fat burning zone’, it can help to lose weight and keep it off. But that doesn’t qualify it as the best form of exercise.

3. Honey is not healthier than sugar. Maybe honey and sugar are the same when talking about weight loss. I haven’t gone into detail about the calorific values of either one. But when it comes to health, I can’t see how someone can conclude that heavily processed white sugar is the same as natural honey. Honey has so many vitamins whereas sugar is really just empty calories. Also processed foods are always a risk due to the unknown chemicals that they may have been exposed to.

There was a long list of inaccuracies, but I couldn’t cover them all here. I just found it a little surprising how a decent diet program could be accompanied by such inaccurate writing. The user could be easily tempted into believing that the book was accurate and spot on – especially if they lost weight following the accompanying diet.

The best defense against being misled is to get a good understanding of the principles that all nutrition, diet and weight loss are based upon. As those core principles become familiar, you will find it easier to distinguish between good and bad advice. Learn the core principles and see your weight loss efforts triple.
